Influence of tyre construction parameters on cavity noise amplification and its impact on electric vehicles

Mihar Mukesh Mavji Ved, Bharatkumar Makwana

When the tyre rolls over a macro uneven road surface, it starts to vibrate which is responsible for cavity noise excitation. This excitation range typically lies between 180-250 Hz for passenger car tyres. With the rise of electric vehicles in the market, vehicle interior noise is becoming a key demand from OEMs across the globe. It is therefore paramount to understand how tyre parameters such as cavity, construction, compounds and reinforcements excite this cavity noise under tyre operating conditions such as inflation pressure, pre-load and vehicle speeds. External cavity noise reduction methods such as foam technology in tyres can help reduce this excitation. However, this also leads to other challenges such as increased product costs. This investigation therefore, shows possible solutions to minimize the impact of cavity noise amplification.
