Abstract

Extreme value theory (EVT) uses the historical record to predict which parts of the world can expect exceptional heatwaves, so that policy-makers can try to mitigate the impact. But as statistically implausible heatwaves hit countries across the world, asks Jordi Prats, can EVT still be relied on to keep people safe?
