Abstract

Background

Sleep quality is affected with cognitive impairment and functional ability in patients with dementia.

Method

Thirty patients with dementia and thirty normal controls were studied. Subjects were evaluated for global cognitive impairment using Hindi Mental State Examination (HMSE) and activities of daily living using Everyday Ability scale for India (EASI). Dementia severity was assessed using Clinical Dementia Rating scale (CDR). A comprehensive sleep‐wake profile was obtained using a set of questionnaires Semi‐Structured Sleep Performa and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).

Result

Patients were matched for age and gender. The severity of cognitive impairment (r value‐0.62, p<0.01) and functional ability (r value 0.59, p<0.01) was proportional to the poor sleep quality index.

Conclusion

Sleep‐wake profile was altered in patients with dementia. This study helps to provide insights into sleep disturbances association with degree of cognitive impairment and degree of functional ability.
