A simplified approach to measuring tactical noise from firearms - relative to STANREC 4785

Morten Huseby

Soldiers firing a small arm will emit sound that has a position disclosing effect, that may lead to incoming enemy fire. Recently NATO STANREC 4785 "Testing Protocol on Acoustic Signature Measurement of Small Arms Suppressors" has been released to quantify this. While this standard may do a good job at quantifying the position disclosing effect, some report that the standard is to complicated to use. The question is then if it is possible to design a method that is easier to use, which still produce usable results. Here we present a suggestion for one such method. The suggested method is compared to the STANREC for one example, using the AK-47 rifle.
