“A PROSPECTIVE STUDY OF FUNCTIONAL OUTCOME OF BICOLUMNAR PLATING IN TYPE C2 AND C3 DISTAL FEMUR FRACTURES”

Objectives: To evaluate the functional and radiological outcome of comminuted type c2 and c3 fractures of distal femur treated by distal femur bicolumnar plating. our study consists of 15 cases of comminuted type c2 and c3 fract Methods: ures of distal femur operated at Sanjay Gandhi institute of trauma and orthopaedics from july 2020 to December 2022. Functional outcome was assessed through neers scoring system. Results: 15 patients with comminuted metaphseal distal femur fractures muller type c2 –subtypes 6 and c3 subtypes 9 patients were studied. mean age of the patients was 45.5 years with age ranging from 20 years to 80years. 9 cases involved the right femur and 6 left sided femur was involved. we have treated the fracture with lateral and medial locking compression plates and all patients were operated with standard open lateral approach for lateral plating and anteromedial approach for medial plating. average surgical procedure timing was 119.5 minutes in our study. most of the patients had excellent postoperative knee exion with average knee exion of 110 degrees. average duration of radiological union was 18 weeks and average duration of weight bearing was 20 weeks. The nal outcome was assessed according to neers scoring system. Complications include supercial wound infection, knee pain , stiffness and shortning in 5 patients. Comminuted distal Conclusion: femur fracture needs bicolumnar xation with plates and screws to achieve bone healing and restore function of the affected limb in shortest time without compromising stability. The advantage medial augmentationwith plating is early weight bearing and butressing of communitted fragments,stable internal xation that does not allow varus collapse, malunion and further implant failure
