(232) HIGH INTENSITY LASER THERAPY IMPROVES ERECTILE FUNCTION IN SHORT TERM: A PILOT STUDY

Abstract Objectives This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of high-intensity laser therapy (HiLT) in patients suffering from mild-to-severe ED. Methods This prospective study included 25 patients 20–57 years of age with a confirmed diagnosis of ED with the five-item version of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5). After a washout period of oral medicines, patients were treated with HiLT and pelvic floor muscle exercises. All patients received 15 sessions of treatment with a high-powered diode laser (Chattanooga HPL-7W, USA) at a frequency of twice per week. In a supine position, laser irradiation was administered to the penis's shaft and crura. The shaft of the penis was irradiated with 1000 joules at 3 watts in continuous mode for xxx minutes, while the crura and perineum were treated with 1500 joules at 5 watts in continuous mode for xxx minutes. The assessment was done before and one month after the treatment by IIEF-5 and erection hardness score (EHS). Results Significant differences were found between the baseline (14.76 ± 4.82) and 1-month follow-up (23.48± 1.69, p<0.0001) mean IIEF-5 questionnaire scores. Similarly, the mean EHS following therapy was significantly higher than at baseline (2.84±0.69 vs 3.96±0.04, p<0.0001). The percentage of patients with EHS>2 at baseline increased from 32% (8/25) to 100% (25/25) at the one-month follow-up. All reported side effects were mild and vanished in one week. Conclusions HILT seems to be effective in improving erectile function in patients suffering from mild-to-severe ED. Further studies are required to elaborate the role of HILT in the treatment of ED.
