Women Scientists of India Who Broke the “Glass Ceiling” in Biological Sciences

Ankita Sehrawat

Science is the driver of the knowledge economy, and this economy cannot be fully strengthened until equal participation of women in science takes place. Empowerment of women in STEM is possible through the equal accommodation of women in science. However, data clearly shows that women are lagging far behind in leadership roles in academia and research institutes worldwide, with India not being an exception. This chapter highlights how a “leaky pipeline” is causing under-representation of women in career progression in STEM with a focus on India. The challenges faced by women to excel in their career in STEM are detailed, and suggestions that support women to hold leadership positions in academia are also discussed. Moreover, women scientists of India who did remarkable work in biological sciences and inspired the world are highlighted.
