Where Is Digital Humanities?

Michael Emmerich

In January 2026, UCLA’s Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities, UCLA DataX, and the UCLA Digital Humanities Program hosted a day-long symposium featuring research presentations by faculty and students from Korea University and UCLA, all focused on DH projects. Drawing on the experience of this symposium, this brief essay suggests that the loosely structured field of DH contains a tension reminiscent of the theoretical framework of world literature, and contends, echoing an essay by David Damrosch about world literature, that to understand what DH is, we must see where it is.
