Whatsapp Marketing and Consumer Purchase Decisions: Evidence From Small Businesses in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir

Adil Majeed Chikan

WhatsApp has emerged as India's most widely used digital communication platform, with approximately 530 million active users nationally and near-universal smartphone adoption in cities like Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Despite this penetration, the mechanisms through which WhatsApp marketing by small businesses influences consumer purchase decisions in tier-2 Indian cities remain understudied. This study examines the impact of WhatsApp marketing on consumer purchase decisions among 100 respondents across five consumer categories in Srinagar City through a structured 15-item Likert-scale questionnaire covering five dimensions: message informativeness, personalization and trust, convenience and engagement, purchase decision influence, and attitude and continued engagement. Results reveal consistently positive consumer attitudes across all dimensions, with personal trust in messages from known local businesses (M = 4.22) emerging as the dominant mechanism of purchase influence a finding that distinguishes WhatsApp marketing's effectiveness from conventional digital advertising and identifies relationship capital as the primary driver of WhatsApp commerce in relationship-based local markets. Consumer sharing intention (M = 4.12) indicates significant organic amplification potential at zero incremental cost to small businesses. The study contributes original empirical evidence on WhatsApp marketing effectiveness in a Himalayan tier-2 city context and offers theoretical and practical implications for small business digital marketing strategy in similar emerging market settings.
