Walk With Rain: An Entangled Journey “In-The-Making”

Naoko Akai-Dennis

Abstract

This reflective and conceptual essay examines the impacts of Dr Janet Miller’s concept of “in-the-making,” tracing the author’s entangled intellectual journey. Anchored in metaphors of water and drawn on Watsuji Tetsuro’s notion of “climate” from The Kyoto School and Karen Barad’s concept of “diffraction” from quantum physics, the piece explores the nonlinear nature of space and time as its theoretical framework for understanding the influences of Miller’s legacy. The author reflects on differing “climates” and their resulting tangles of relations among notions of identity and varying critical theories. She discusses how the trajectory of these entanglements revolves around Miller’s idea of “in-the-making.” Ultimately, she muses on her ongoing “journey” of thinking, learning, writing, re-envisioning, re-generating within academia and beyond.
