Virulence and Antibiotic Susceptibility of Proteus mirabilis Isolated from Clinical Samples

Background:
Proteus mirabilis
possesses several types of virulence factors that allow it to be responsible for a variety of diseases, including lung infections, urinary tract infections, burns, wounds, diabetic foot ulcers, and other clinical causes.
Objectives:
The aim of the current study is to evaluate many
P. mirabilis
virulence factors identified in a variety of clinical specimens.
Materials and Methods:
A total of 250 specimens (94 urine specimens, 62 ear swabs, 57 surgical wound swabs, 22 diabetic foot swabs, and 15 burn swabs) were collected from patients admitted to Babylon Hospital during the period of February 2023 to July 2023. The
P. mirabilis
isolates detection according to the culture, biochemical, and genetic by
16SRNA.
The current investigation identified several virulence factors, including the development of biofilms, protease activity, swarming movement, hemolysis, adhesion, generation of urease and lipase, and antibiotic susceptibility testing.
Results:
The percentage of
P. mirabillis
according to the culture, biochemical, and genetic by
16SRNA
isolated from 250 specimens was 41 (16.4%), including 17 (6.8), 8 (3.2), 6 (2.4), 6 (2.4), and 4 (1.6) isolated from urine samples, ear swabs, surgical wound swabs, diabetic foot swabs, and burn swabs, respectively. The results of the present study showed that all
P. mirabilis
isolates form swarming motility, urease production, and protease production. Also found the ability of adhesion, lipase production, and biofilm formation in prevalence 28 (68.9%), 34 (82.95%), and 36 (87.8%), respectively, but no isolates were able to produce hemolysin. The results of the antibiotics susceptibility test showed a higher resistance against ampicillin in a percentage of 35 (85.36%) and a lower resistance against meropenem in a percentage of 2 (2.43%).
Conclusions:
The
P. mirabilis
possesses a variety of virulence factors connected to various illnesses, and isolates have the capacity to be high resistant to ampicillin antibiotics.
