Using weapons of mass destruction in terrorist attacks

Bojana Knežević

Weapons of mass destruction constitute a class of weapons whose effects are reflected in a high number of human casualties, adverse impacts on flora and fauna, and the causation of environmental catastrophes with long-term consequences. The possibility of the use of weapons of mass destruction in terrorist attacks poses a significant security risk, with serious negative implications for human life, plants, animals, and the environment. This paper analysis selected cases of terrorist attacks involving weapons of mass destruction, and incidents indicating elements of the potential commission of the terrorism offense. Our analysis demonstrated the existence of a certain level of security threat arising from the possible use of weapons of mass destruction in the execution of terrorist attacks. The level of such threats largely depends on various factors, including the perpetrators themselves, the availability of weapons of mass destruction, political, military, and other security-related factors.
