Using the Probe Technique in Dermatological Consultations for Qualitative Data Collection

Yilin Jiang, Narina A. Samah, Zhanshuo Xiao

Abstract

In dermatological consultations, understanding the patient’s lived experiences beyond physical symptoms is crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment. The ‘probe technique’ has emerged as a valuable method for collecting qualitative data, allowing dermatologists to explore psychosocial and behavioural dimensions of skin conditions. This paper delves into the various types of probes—clarification, elaboration, contrast, affective, and detail-oriented—and their integration into dermatological consultations to elicit richer, more comprehensive data. By employing these probing methods, dermatologists can tailor treatment plans to both the physical and emotional aspects of dermatological conditions. Additionally, the paper addresses the challenges and ethical considerations when using this method, particularly in sensitive discussions about body image and self-esteem. This holistic approach ultimately enhances patient care by addressing both the medical and psychosocial dimensions of dermatological diseases, improving treatment outcomes and patients’ quality of life.
