URBAN REGENERATION AND ADAPTIVE REUSE IN HISTORIC PUBLIC SPACES. Sustainability Assessment of the Conceptual Proposal for Cibin Square, Romania

Izabela Patrica Pop
This article examines urban design concepts, highlighting why urban regeneration is important to the sustainability cycle in architecture. How can we, as architects, explore new opportunities for innovative design while promoting thepreservation of cultural heritage? To answer this question, I documented a conceptual proposal for the urban regeneration of Cibin Square in Sibiu,Romania, which was presented at the 2023 Bucharest Architecture Annual, within the Architecture Portfolio/PublicArchitecture section. I chose this example because it is a great representation of sustainable urban design that reflects the quality of the intervention process, where the site is carefully analyzed and valued, the importance of the urban fabric is recognized, and collective memory is preserved. My research is based on architectural documentation with a focus on theories and principles of urban design, illustrating how the transformation of an underutilized historical building, like Cibin Market Hall, can provide a guideline for modern interventions in well-established urban contexts that need to respond to contemporary economic, social, and environmental needs while fostering urban resilience.
