In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals an impurity-mediated Cr redox cycle in LiCl–KCl: Cr(

ii
) is oxidized to Cr(
iii
) with H 2 evolution at high temperature and reduced back to Cr(
ii
) by H 2 during solidification.
