Understanding Victims

Laura L. Finley

Abstract

Although anyone can be a victim of domestic or dating violence, certain demographic groups are at greater risk. This increased risk is the result of social, economic, and political factors that result in racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and classism. Understanding the risk factors for abuse can help advocates, activists, and educators better tailor policies, programs, and educational initiatives designed to prevent abuse. This chapter reviews the risk factors faced by women of color, immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, persons with disabilities, and males. Further, the chapter describes help-seeking behavior by victims from these demographic groups as well as unique barriers to receiving assistance.
