Understanding the Plastic Footprint: Life Cycle Analysis and Sustainable Management Strategy

Pabitra Mohan Mahapatra, Achyut Kumar Panda

Abstract

The growing dependence on plastics, high molecular weight organic polymers derived from fossil fuels and renewable resources, has driven progress across various industries. Global production is nearing 360 million tons annually and is projected to double in 20 years, but this growth has caused severe environmental challenges, including pollution and health risks. An estimated 8.3 billion tons of virgin plastics have been produced, with 4.9 billion tons ending up in landfills or natural habitats, primarily from single-use products like food packaging that significantly contribute to marine pollution. This chapter explores the life cycle of plastics and the associated external costs, emphasizing the need for better waste management strategies. It covers stages like raw material extraction, polymerization, manufacturing, usage, collection, sorting, and disposal, detailing different recycling methods (primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary), and alternative disposal techniques. The impacts of microplastics and greenhouse gas emissions on ecosystems and human health are also explored. The concept of a plastic footprint is introduced to evaluate the environmental impact of plastic use, highlighting the importance of effective waste management in achieving sustainable development goals. The chapter concludes with a discussion on policy interventions and future challenges, highlighting the need for collaborative action to mitigate the impact of plastic.
