Abstract

A Privileged Path to Career Advancement. Notaries from the Angevin Southern Italy at the Papal Curia between the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Centuries. This essay offers a reflection on south-Italian notaries who relocated to the papal Curia during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The analysis focuses on the careers of these notaries, many of whom remain largely understudied, with the aim of examining the extent to which employment in the offices of the papal Curia or in the service of cardinals represented a swift and privileged path of promotion that frequently extended beyond the purely professional sphere.
