Una fuente portuguesa del
Viaje del Parnaso: Primeyra e segunda parte dos romances
(1596) de Francisco Rodrigues Lobo
Rafael Castillo Bejarano
The direct or indirect sources of the
Viaje del Parnaso
(1614) have been identified in Italian literature (Pietro Aretino, Caporali) or Castilian literature (Juan de la Cueva). In this article, I examine ballads by the poet, novelist, and courtly essayist Francisco Rodrigues Lobo (1575?–1621), published in 1596, as sources for passages or motifs in Cervantes’s poem. While the expected influence of Cervantes’s work on Rodrigues Lobo’s pastoral novels has been noted, the influence of the Portuguese balladeer on Castilian literature in general, and on Cervantes in particular, remains to be fully delineated. My study delves into the cross-fertilization of Hispano-Lusitanian literary relations during a period of redefinition of linguistic and national
parnassuses
, expanding the map of connections between a global Cervantes and the literary culture of his time.
