TRANSPORT POLICY OF TÜRKİYE AND INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC CORRIDORS

Volkan Özdemir, Aziz Aksu
In recent years, global trade and transport dynamics have undergone significant transformations, driven primarily by the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Changes have coincided with the revitalization of international economic corridors across the Eurasian landmass, where Türkiye occupies a pivotal geopolitical and economic position. This article first evaluates the significance and distinctive characteristics of these international economic corridors. It then examines Türkiye’s transport policy, which aims to leverage international transport initiatives to promote economic development and regional integration. Among these initiatives, the development of the Middle Corridor, an emerging transcontinental trade route linking Asia and Europe, presents significant opportunities for Türkiye. The potential opening of the Zangezur would further enhance Türkiye’s role and economic benefits. This study finally concludes that a more comprehensive transport strategy -integrating Türkiye’s Mediterranean infrastructure with the Caspian Basin - could enable the country to transform its geographical position into a dynamic and resilient logistics hub.
