Timber Problems and the Measures: Plywood Industry of Assam

Badal Sen
The rate of production of plywood timber in Assam has been low until recent years. In 1986-87 it was only 0.5 Mm3 when the production of plywood was 32 Mm2. As that of country’s aggregate production, the relative share for Assam has declined from 55% in 1971 to 35% in 1987. Considering the sustained growth trend in Assam’s plywood production the future demand and shortfall of timber in 2000 A.D. would be 0.517 Mm3 and 0.388 Mm3 respectively. For the huge shortfall of plywood timber, the production of plywood in Assam is bound for certain set-backs. If the growth potentiality of the industry is to be maintained, the dependence on imported timber would have to be raised on war footing besides accepting a few important measures.
