Nancy Natung, Radhe Amung, Nada Tido

Among the many tribal populations in Arunachal Pradesh, the Nyishi tribe has practiced polygynous marriages since time immemorial. This custom has been passed down through generations, shaping the social fabric of Nyishi society. This study explores the sociocultural factors that contributed to the practice of polygyny within the Nyishi community, while also examining its significance in their society. In addition, the research highlights the transitional phases that have influenced the practice over time. By comparing and contrasting the polygyny of the past with its current form in Nyishi society, this study reveals that while the practice remains deeply valued, its characteristics have evolved. Furthermore, it examines how the motivations for polygyny have shifted, reflecting broader cultural changes. This study aims to provide a nuanced understanding of the various facets of this cultural transformation.
