The Weapons of Her Warfare: Equipment for Spiritual Wellness in Academic Professionals
Demetria LambertAbstract
Experts have found that more and more academic professionals lack the support needed to have a long-standing career in academia. They are not supported in developing their ability to bounce back from setbacks and adapt to new circumstances. Employing mindfulness practices and tapping into spiritual wisdom to promote peace and resilience can increase an educator’s awareness of distressing work situations and their own reactive states. This chapter endeavors to provide insight into strategies, research, and spiritual tools/weapons that promote social–emotional wellness, a more peaceful state of mind, and resilience, ultimately training Black women in the art of spiritual warfare.
Creating a more relaxed and fortified mental state can lead to a more enjoyable teaching, learning, and leadership experience. Educators who operate under less stress find it easier to engage in all aspects of their profession, thus increasing productivity in their professional and personal lives. Peace must be preserved at all costs. Spirituality has scientific merit; it affects the psychological, emotional, and physical well-being of all people, particularly women who tend to be more in tune with this aspect of their lives. Black women who are supported spiritually feel better about life, themselves, their work climate, and are better equipped to overcome oppression and build and encourage others. This chapter endeavors to teach them how to do that for themselves and possess the spiritual weapons of warfare to support every aspect of their emotional well-being.
