The use of anglicisms in the Russian bar industry
Inna Vladimirovna BorisovaThe relevance of this study is due to the necessity to identify, analyze, and systematize the linguistic processes occurring in the Russian language in light of Russia's integration into the global hospitality sphere. The aim of the research is to examine the use of anglicisms in the Russian bar industry, determine their functions, and assess their impact on communication between staff and visitors. The object of the study comprises anglicisms used in the Russian bar industry, while the subject of the study focuses on the peculiarities of anglicism perception by native Russian speakers in Russian bars. The theoretical significance of this work can be articulated as the expansion of general understanding of the borrowing process in the Russian language through contemporary material. The practical significance of the research lies in the fact that the results obtained can be utilized by specialists in the development of training programs for bar staff, aimed at enhancing their linguistic competence and improving the effectiveness and environmental friendliness of communication with visitors. The materials for the research included the Encyclopedic Dictionary of F.A. Brockhaus and I.A. Efron, the Encyclopedic Dictionary for Young Philologists by M.V. Panov, bartenders' explanatory dictionaries, as well as survey materials. The study employed the following methods: total sampling method, statistical data analysis method, contextual analysis method, surveys, and descriptive and comparative methods. The novelty of the research lies in the specification of trends in the use of anglicisms in a specific field – the bar industry in Russia – through the analysis of contemporary empirical data reflected in the survey results of Russian-speaking bar visitors. Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: – A balanced combination of lexicographic, cultural-sociological, pragmatic, sociolinguistic, cognitive, and communicative approaches is necessary when studying anglicisms. – The stages of anglicism penetration into the Russian language coincided with significant economic, political, sports, and cultural events. – Under the influence of globalization and integration, the use of anglicisms in the Russian bar industry is becoming increasingly widespread and commonplace. – The use of anglicisms in the Russian bar industry does not significantly impede the communication process; most respondents do not see it as a substantial threat to their native language; they perceive it as something natural that does not lead to misunderstandings or disrupt their comfort during relaxation.
