The Theory of Success and Women’s Position in the United States
Maia NadareThis article introduces the Theory of Pro and Con, which proposes that success can arise from either positive or negative catalysts, while adversity may intensify motivation and achievement. It applies the theory to women’s experiences of social constraint and personal hardship, drawing on historical and biographical examples including Eleanor Roosevelt, Bess Truman, Hillary Clinton and the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Hatshepsut. The article argues that success should be understood not as wealth or public recognition, but as personal fulfilment achieved through doing one’s best. It further suggests that dissatisfaction, resilience and the capacity to resist expectations can help individuals pursue their aims despite significant obstacles.
