The Role of Ultrasound Imaging in Pes Planus (Flat Foot Deformity)—What Sonographers Need to Know
Sumi Shrestha‐TaylorABSTRACT
Pes planus (flatfoot or pes planovalgus) is a common condition within the general population; however, it remains under‐recognised as a potential contributor to a wide range of lower limb pathologies in both adult and paediatric patients. Furthermore, the role of ultrasound in patients with pes planus is not well established in the existing literature. This paper reviews the relevant anatomy, classifications, aetiologies and common complications of pes planus, with particular emphasis on the application of ultrasound in this condition. Enhancing sonographers' understanding of pes planus and the imaging characteristics associated with its complications will support a more comprehensive and holistic approach to the management of patients presenting with foot and ankle disorders.
