The role of NHS Resolution in the maternity safety landscape in England

Alison Wonnacott, Katherine Sarah Barton, Elizabeth Pells, Erum Khan

NHS Resolution is the organisation responsible for managing legal claims against the NHS in England and has committed to working collaboratively to improve maternity outcomes in its 2025 national strategy, however many frontline clinicians remain unaware of the role it plays in patient safety. NHS Resolution acts as a system integrator, aligning all levels of the system from women to frontline staff to national government. This article will provide an overview of current NHS Resolution initiatives to contribute to improving maternity outcomes. These will include the Early Notification and Maternity Incentive Scheme and other national programmes, including the Avoiding Brain Injuries in Childbirth programme. We aim to provide frontline clinicians with a broad understanding of the role of NHS Resolution, where it sits within the maternity safety landscape and how this organisation can support both NHS trusts and clinicians to reduce avoidable harm. This article will signpost to NHS Resolution resources and expand on some overarching principles such as ‘Saying Sorry’ and ‘Being Fair 2’.
