The Role of Herbal Medicine in Modern Healthcare: A Comprehensive Review

P. K. Aswathi

Herbal medicine, also known as phytomedicine, utilises plant-based remedies to treat various illnesses and enhance overall health. Its roots are deeply embedded in historical practices and continue to hold significant therapeutic value in contemporary medicine. Herbal treatments involve bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins, which have been found effective against infections, chronic diseases, and conditions like cancer and antibiotic resistance. Recent innovations focus on improving the bioavailability and efficacy of these natural remedies through advanced drug delivery systems, such as lipid molecular complexes. However, the integration of herbal medicine into mainstream healthcare poses challenges related to safety, toxicity, and interactions with conventional drugs. As the field evolves, future research should aim to integrate modern biotechnological tools, such as genetic engineering and omics technologies, with traditional herbal knowledge. Additionally, sustainable practices, rigorous standardisation, and a strong regulatory framework are essential to ensure the safety, efficacy, and conservation of medicinal plants. By bridging traditional knowledge with modern science, herbal medicine has the potential to enhance global health and offer complementary approaches to conventional treatments.
