The Responsibility of Zoos to Advance the Rights and Interests of Indigenous People
Jack Pascoe, Sally SherwenABSTRACT
The Earth is in its 6th mass extinction event, in 2022, in response to this crisis, 196 countries adopted the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), a legally binding international agreement that aims to halt and reverse the trajectory of biodiversity loss by 2030. It is clear that Zoos have a role to play in this conservation effort; however, there has been less guidance for zoo and regarding how they can support the rights of Indigenous Peoples within this movement. In this paper, we explore ways in which zoos can support Indigenous Peoples across five domains of a modern zoo.
