The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence and School Engagement in High School Students: The Mediating Role of Social Anxiety

Ali Karababa
Evidence demonstrates that emotional intelligence is a significant positive predictor of school engagement. However, there is a limited understanding of the underlying mechanisms of this relationship. Accordingly, this research was designed to fill the gap in the literature by having two aims: (1) to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and school engagement and (2) to test the mediating role of social anxiety in the relationship between emotional intelligence and school engagement. The research was conducted in light of a correlational survey model, and the convenience sampling method was adopted. The sample consisted of 413 high school students (214 girls and 199 boys) aged between 14 and 18 who completed a demographic form along with measurements of emotional intelligence, social anxiety, and school engagement. First, correlation findings showed a significant negative correlation between emotional intelligence and social anxiety and a significant positive correlation between emotional intelligence and school engagement. Furthermore, a significant negative correlation was found between social anxiety and school engagement. Second, the mediation analysis confirmed that social anxiety played a partial mediating role between emotional intelligence and school engagement. In conclusion, these findings highlight the importance of emotional intelligence in promoting school engagement in high school students.
