The Psychological Function of Color in Environmental Design: A Coupling Study for Mental Well-being and Supportive Environments

Abstract

Objective

This study investigates the psychological function of color in environmental design, exploring its coupling with human-centered principles to regulate mood, reduce stress, and enhance mental well-being. The research considers implications for creating psychologically supportive spaces, including environments that may benefit populations experiencing high stress or mental health challenges.

Subjects and Methods

A mixed-methods approach was used, combining experiments (n=180) and field studies in office, healthcare, and residential settings. Participants were exposed to varied color schemes. Psychological responses were measured via the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and physiological indicators. Post-occupancy evaluations and interviews provided qualitative insights into user experience and perceived psychological safety.

Results

Cool-color schemes significantly increased calmness (35%, p<0.01) and reduced physiological stress. Warm-color environments enhanced social interaction willingness by 28%. Integrating color psychology with human-centered design raised user satisfaction by 40% and reduced self-reported anxiety by 30%. The coupling effect was strongest in healthcare settings, improving patient-reported well-being by 45%.

Conclusions

Color is a powerful tool for emotional regulation and mental well-being in environmental design. The deliberate coupling of color psychology with human-centered principles can create restorative, supportive spaces. This evidence-based framework aids designers in promoting psychological health, suggesting that thoughtful design can contribute to broader mental health support strategies in various built environments.
