The production and circulation of money. Rhythms and dynamics of growth (10th-12th centuries)

This study proposes a periodization of the monetary history of the central Middle Ages (10th-12th centuries), with a focus on the Kingdom of Italy and its silver denier coinage. Recent archae-ometric research allows a revised interpretation of the monetary reforms traditionally attrib-uted to the Ottonian period, as well as a more nuanced assessment of both growth patterns and phases of stagnation during the 11th century. In the 12th century, particularly in its second half, several processes reached maturity, revealing, from a monetary perspective, significant quali-tative and quantitative changes.
