The power of reframing medical information for patients with food allergy
Aikaterini AnagnostouBackground: Food allergies pose a burden on the daily life of individuals with food allergy, including an important psychosocial impact. However, the way medical information is framed can profoundly influence how patients understand their condition, engage with their provider, and tolerate uncertainty or risk. Objective: This article aims to discuss the value of reframing medical information for individuals with food allergy. It outlines how reframing can address uncertainty, improve patients’ perception of risk, and support patients in achieving better outcomes. Methods: This work is a narrative review. Medical literature databases were searched. Searches were limited to English language and to articles within the past 15 years. Key articles were selected with a focus on recent literature (within the previous 5‐7 years). Results: For individuals with food allergy, the words that are used to explain the condition and its treatment have the potential to shape how patients live with it. When individuals understand why a treatment is recommended and what each step of the process contributes, they are more likely to participate actively and persist through challenges. Conclusion: Reframing has the power to transform food allergy from an unpredictable adversary into a manageable condition that patients can understand, anticipate, and control.
