The political representation of the French left-wing in the Early 2020s: A Discursive Perspective

Artem Igorevich Myasnikov

This paper analyzes rhetorical strategies of French left-wing political parties in 2017–2024. The subject of the research is the evolution of the left-wing political language within the framework of critical discourse analysis and narrative approach. This article examines the transformation of traditional socialist concepts—such as “class struggle” and “social justice” – in response to contemporary conditions, highlighting their evolution into new rhetorical frameworks like “climate justice” and “ecosocialism.” This work focuses on the analysis of various forms of political communication, including election platforms, parliamentary debates, and public speeches by party leaders. The study also addresses the dynamic interplay between ideological continuity and innovation in political discourse, illustrating how French left-wing parties draw upon historical precedents—such as the Popular Front of 1936—while simultaneously articulating responses to contemporary socio-environmental challenges. As a result, a new discourse emerges in which the traditional values of the left-wing are reinterpreted within the context of contemporary political realities. Consequently, the study demonstrates that ideological transformation in the field of political communication involves not a rejection of the past, but a dialectical synthesis of traditional and innovative components in political discourse. The practical significance of this work lies in the possibility of applying its results to analyze current political processes and predict the further evolution of the left-wing movement. The results have theoretical significance for scholars in the field of political linguistics, ideological transformations and comparative political science.
