The Origins of Turkey’s Economic Integration with Europe: Dependency and the US-Led International System (1945-1960)

Merve Yavuz
This study examines Turkey - Europe relations not within its institutional historical development through the European Union (the EU), but within the framework of Turkey's structural dependency relationships, as a part of the US-led international economic system whose foundations for Europe were determined with the Marshall Plan. To comprehend the nature of the political economy of Turkey-Europe relations, dependency theory is used. This theory indicates how a peripheral state faces crises as a result of its relations with the center. Turkey’s problems of integration into this system reflect a dependent character and it is prone to crises.
