The opportunities and challenges of conducting a methodological review on the applications of Q methodology in Applied Linguistics
Nicola Morea, Hessameddin GhanbarAbstract
In this chapter, we reflect on the process of conducting a methodological review on the applications of Q methodology in Applied Linguistics. In particular, we focus on the methodological dilemmas and issues arising from such work, and how these have been addressed. For example, we consider issues around selecting qualifying empirical research, including the anticipated challenge of delimiting what counts as an application of this methodology, or distinguishing between an empirical study and a theoretical study that uses a case exemplar. We also reflect on the challenges of coding analytical approaches in a context characterised by frequent lack of methodological transparency in published research. The chapter concludes with a reflection on the lessons learnt during this process.
