The Need for DEI Education in Business Schools: A Call to Action

Donna Maria Blancero, C. Douglas Johnson

Abstract

This chapter responds to the growing backlash against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) efforts in the United States, where political rhetoric and media narratives have led to the reduction or elimination of programs in some states. Rather than accepting this portrayal as representative, the chapter argues for a deeper, more accurate understanding of DEI—particularly its role in preparing university students to navigate and lead within diverse organizational environments. It explores three guiding questions: Why is DEI essential to the country’s progress? Why is a foundational understanding of DEI necessary before entering the workforce? And what specific skills must students develop to lead with equity and integrity? The chapter emphasizes that policymakers must grasp the importance of DEI education before making decisions that affect organizational structures and culture. DEI is framed not as a political liability, but as a critical component of student development, institutional responsibility, and long-term organizational success.
