“The Lioness of Castile”: Fate and Image of Maria Pacheco

This article examines the life of María Pacheco, one of the leaders of the Comunero revolt (1520—1522). It traces the influence of María's background, education, and upbringing on her views and actions. Particular attention is given to the analysis of her marriage, the circumstances of which, leading to disappointed expectations, directly influenced her life stance. The activities of the “Lioness of Castile” during the Comunero revolt and her efforts to defend Toledo are analyzed. Three 16th-century authors — Pedro Mártir de Angleria, Pedro Mejía, and Antonio de Guevara — are used to examine the origins and distinctive features of the negative image of María Pacheco.
