The Italian hard-to-abate sectors: a case study on potential hydrogen use

Francesco Gabrielli
This chapter investigates the role of hydrogen in decarbonising Italy’s hard-to-abate industries, where electrification is technically or economically challenging. It analyses supply-demand dynamics, infrastructure readiness, and the transition from grey to low-carbon hydrogen, including the potential contribution of blue hydrogen. Particular attention is paid to network adaptation requirements for integrating hydrogen into gas and electricity systems. A detailed case study of the ceramics sector - featuring the Iris Ceramica Group - illustrates practical opportunities and constraints, demonstrating how hydrogen could reduce emissions while maintaining industrial competitiveness.
