The Intersection of Airway Health and Dentistry: A Focus on Holistic Pediatric Care

Prerna Yadav

Abstract

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in pediatric patients is a growing concern, with significant implications for overall health, growth, and development. This review explores various treatment modalities available for managing pediatric SDB, including surgical interventions, myofunctional therapy, rapid maxillary expansion (RME), and mandibular advancement appliances. While adenotonsillectomy remains a primary surgical option, alternative approaches such as continuous positive airway pressure and intranasal corticosteroids may be employed for residual cases. Myofunctional therapy plays a crucial role in strengthening orofacial muscles and correcting harmful oral habits, contributing to improved airway function. Orthodontic treatments, such as RME and functional appliances, help address skeletal discrepancies that may contribute to airway obstruction. In addition, procedures like frenectomy can aid in optimizing tongue posture and function. With growing awareness, pediatric dentists are uniquely positioned to identify and manage SDB risk factors through routine examinations and interdisciplinary collaboration. A comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach is essential for early diagnosis and effective management, minimizing long-term health complications associated with untreated SDB in children.
