The Incidence of Fibroadenoma among Females Attending a Breast Clinic
Elaf Yousif RashidAbstract
Background:
Hormones affect breast tissue growth during reproductive life and menopause. Most breast conditions affecting females are benign; some may give rise to symptoms that can be clinically valuable and may mimic breast cancer, especially in its early, curable stages.
Objectives:
To assess the incidence of fibroadenoma in female patients attending breast clinics at Al-Hilla Teaching Hospital.
Materials and Methods:
A cross-sectional study was conducted over 2 months in 2025, reviewing medical case files of all patients who attended the breast clinic at Al-Hilla Teaching Hospital.
Results:
The study sample included 200 females attending an outpatient breast clinic at Al-Hilla Teaching Hospital. The mean age was 32.12 ± 4.5 years, ranging from 16 to 70 years; more than half of them (54%) were aged between 20 and 30 years, 68.5% were living in urban areas, more than half (62%) had secondary education, and the family history of breast disease was negative in most patients (84%).
Conclusion:
Fibroadenomas are the most common benign breast disease. Being common in the second and third decades of life, the common clinical presentations are breast pain and a lump, which can be followed with ultrasound at regular intervals every 6 months.
