The Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on College Students with ADHD

Students diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) struggle with a multitude of problems in postsecondary education, such as submitting assignments in a timely manner, organizing coursework, and staying focused during lectures. The COVID-19 pandemic greatly impacted those who already struggled with postsecondary education, resulting in the exacerbation of symptoms that impacted academic performance and decreased rates of graduation. We conducted a systematic review of the literature focused on the impact of COVID-19 on postsecondary students diagnosed with ADHD, as well as successful interventions that alleviate ADHD symptoms. Interventions that target academic-related impairment can provide a basis for increasing success rates amongst college students diagnosed with ADHD. The chapter concludes with a descriptive case study to demonstrate how instructors and counselors can gain further insight into the challenges experienced by this population and the interventions that can offer them assistance.
