The Impact of E-health Literacy on Patient Experiences in Medical Tourism

This chapter states how e-health literacy is influential on the experiences of the patients undergoing medical tourism. As there is an increasing amount of digitalization of health care, individuals are exposed to information about their health on the Internet when they resort to medical tourism. It is possible to define e-health literacy as the capacity to locate, interpret, and utilize digital learnt health-related data. This literacy is needed to ensure that the patients make informed choices regarding treatment in foreign countries. The study employs the document analysis method to determine its impact on such variables as the choice of healthcare providers, preferences in terms of treatment, and overall satisfaction. This may be supported by the fact that patients with higher e-health literacy levels do not perceive themselves as being in a state of threat of medical tourism, as they possess more skills and access to reliable information, can compare prices, and make sensible choices. Conversely, poor e-health literacy can cause confusion, uncertainty, and poor experiences with patients. The article concludes that e-health literacy among patients and health professionals, and digital health tools, mobile applications, and Internet tools play a crucial role in developing a more secure, open, and patient-focused medical tourism environment.
