THE EVERYDAY LIFE IN A NORTHUMBRIAN MANOR PROJECT
Bethany ElliottFollowing the completion of the Manorial Documents Register (MDR) project for Northumberland in 2018, Northumberland Archives felt that work remained to be done to encourage the use of these often-overlooked records. The MDR is a useful resource for the location and extent of manorial records, but a frequent enquiry to Northumberland Archives was how to use and interpret the records themselves. This article outlines the decisions which led to the formation of the Everyday Life in a Northumbrian Manor (EDLNM) project , which aimed to provide researchers with the tools they would require to confidently use manorial records, and to raise their profile as a resource. This included providing digitised records and learning tools online, alongside in-person workshops and talks. The article will also detail the findings of the EDLNM project, and the conclusions which were drawn following its completion in January 2025.
