The hidden grazers beneath our feet and soil carbon storage

In this article, Sten Anslan and Carlos Alejandro Aguilar Trigueros, Academy Research Fellows at the University of Jyväskylä, explore the overlooked role of belowground grazers and how these tiny organisms contribute to soil carbon storge, ecosystem health and climate regulation. Grazing shapes landscapes across the world. Livestock and wild herbivores can dramatically transform entire landscapes, altering nutrient cycling and ecosystem structure. But grazing also happens belowground, carried out by a myriad of small animals living in the soil matrix.
