The Global Experience Measure: A Common Ground for Experience Excellence

Jason A. Wolf, Brittany Lax, Karen Walsh

In 2022, The Beryl Institute community called for a new approach to experience measurement, one that was focused on what truly matters to patients and promoted opportunities for shared learning across borders. Over four years, more than 1,000 community members from six continents co-designed the Global Experience Measure (GXM). Between October 2024 and May 2026, GXM was deployed to healthcare organizations in 12 countries and translated from English into five other languages, capturing over 8,000 diverse voices. The six core questions formed a single, reliable measure overall (Cronbach's α = .95) and held strong in every country surveyed (α = .83–.98). Patients also confirmed that these questions measured what mattered to them, with 85.5% saying they reflected what was important in their healthcare experience and 83.3% saying they addressed the expectations they have for how healthcare should be provided where they live. These findings show that a short, common set of questions can capture the things that matter most to patients. GXM opens the borders to elevating and learning about experience excellence no matter the geographic location, language, culture, or care setting.
