The Gift as a Language of Trust

Anastas Terzobaliev, Nadya Murad

Abstract

Corporate and diplomatic gifts extend beyond their material form, serving as instruments of symbolic, non-verbal communication in international context. Drawing on thirty-three years of professional experience of authors and grounded in the theoretical foundations of business protocol, corporate ethics, and intercultural communication, the paper views gift-giving as a structured practice embedded in trust formation. The analysis focuses on the relational, symbolic, and strategic functions of corporate gifts in global and cross-cultural context. Particular attention is given to ethical and legal boundaries and the practical logic that guides the selection and presentation of gifts in cross-border environments. The paper argues that when gifts are culturally sensitive, ethically bounded, and strategically aligned, they function as a distinct “language of trust,” reinforcing long-term partnerships, enhancing corporate reputation, and supporting sustainable international cooperation.
