The functions of eco-certifications and labels in sustainable and green hospitality

Abstract

The first sustainability certifications emerged in the 1970s, and since then, their number has grown considerably across the global tourism sector. As the number of certifications has increased, so too has research on their role and impact. This paper examines the function of sustainability certification in tourism, particularly in the hotel and accommodation sector. Drawing on a systematic literature review, the study qualitatively evaluates 86 relevant studies published from 2017 to 2023. The analysis identifies four key functions of sustainability certifications for hotels: (1) guidance and regulatory function, (2) status and identification function, (3) benefit and profit function, and (4) knowledge and progress function.
