The Formation of the Image of the Orenburg Region in the Works and Activities of Rizaetdin Fahretdinov

The article examines the role of the prominent Jadidist educator, religious reformer, and public figure Rizaetdin Fakhretdinov (1859—1936) in shaping the cultural and intellectual image of the Orenburg region in the early 20th century. The author analyzes Fakhretdinov’s multifaceted activities, including his editorial work in the journal “Shura” (1908—1917), pedagogical innovations at the “Husainiya” madrasah, and scholarly research, such as the encyclopedia “Asar”. The primary focus is on how Fakhretdinov crafted the image of the Orenburg region as a center of Muslim enlightenment and reformist thought in Russia. Through “Shura”, he created an intellectual showcase for the region, publishing materials on theology, history, pedagogy, and politics, as well as biographies of prominent figures in Muslim culture. At “Husainiya” madrasah, Fakhretdinov introduced a new-method educational system that combined traditional Islamic disciplines with modern scientific approaches, fostering the perception of Orenburg as a space for the harmonious synthesis of tradition and modernity. The author emphasizes that the image of the region as a “cultural crossroads” and a “bridge between civilizations”, shaped by Fakhretdinov, remains relevant today.
