The Financial and Anti-Gender Far Right

Verónica Gago, Lucí Cavallero

Abstract

This article addresses the importance of the feminist movement in Argentina and Latin America to then situate and analyze the virulence of the anti-gender element in the emergence of a victorious far right. After characterizing the phenomenon more broadly, it discusses the first two years’ experience (2023–2025) of the Javier Milei government to contribute to the comprehension of global rights that make gender one of the scapegoats of their politics of hate. The main line of argument is to connect a feminist reading of household debt to an analysis of the far right in Argentina. This argument is deployed at several levels under the argument that there is an organic relationship between austerity, antifeminism, and the far right’s victory. It focuses on strategies of “financial recolonization” through the proliferation of financial tools in a context of increasing precarity and the deployment of an entrepreneurial subjectivity.
